ASPERO APEX AXS 1 Gravel Performance
The ASPERO APEX AXS 1 is a gravel bike designed for riders who want a fast and versatile setup for mixed-surface riding. Cervélo developed the ASPERO specifically for gravel, combining responsive handling with practical features for long rides, training and racing.
The bike uses SRAM Apex AXS electronic shifting and a wide-range 12-speed drivetrain. It also comes with a Reserve 30 GR AL wheelset, carbon handlebar and carbon seatpost. This creates a balanced configuration for riders who want a performance-focused gravel bike.
Cervélo currently lists the ASPERO APEX AXS 1 at $4,550.
SRAM Apex AXS Electronic Shifting
The ASPERO APEX AXS 1 uses SRAM Apex AXS electronic shifting. Its current specification includes a 46T chainring with a 10–52T 12-speed drivetrain. This wide range gives riders useful gearing for both fast sections and steep gravel climbs.
Electronic shifting allows riders to change gears quickly as the terrain changes. This can be particularly useful on gravel courses where short climbs, descents and rough sections can appear one after another.
The 10–52T range also provides plenty of low gearing for steep gradients. At the same time, the higher gears allow riders to maintain speed on smoother surfaces and paved connections.
Cervélo ASPERO Gravel Bike Design
Cervélo designed the ASPERO around modern gravel riding. The current frame uses a threaded T47a bottom bracket and a Universal Derailleur Hanger. The UDH standard also provides compatibility with SRAM Transmission drivetrains.
Cervélo also refined the frame to improve comfort. The seat stays are dropped to provide additional compliance at the rear, while front-end stiffness has been reduced slightly. The frame also provides more mud clearance.
These updates help the ASPERO remain comfortable and controlled during longer gravel rides. They also make the platform suitable for changing conditions where riders may encounter wet roads, loose gravel and rough terrain.
Gravel Handling and Tire Setup
Gravel riding can involve many different surfaces. A single route can move from smooth hardpack to loose gravel, rough roads and technical corners.
The ASPERO uses gravel-specific geometry designed to balance stability and responsive handling. The current platform is available in sizes from 48 to 61, with 700C wheels across the range.
Tire selection can further adjust the bike for different riding conditions. Riders can choose tires based on terrain, weather and personal preferences. Wider tires can provide additional traction and comfort on rough gravel, while faster-rolling tires can suit smoother routes.
The additional mud clearance is also useful for riders who regularly ride in wet or muddy conditions.
Reserve 30 GR AL Wheelset
The ASPERO APEX AXS 1 comes with a Reserve 30 GR AL wheelset.
A dedicated gravel wheelset provides a solid foundation for mixed-surface riding. Wheel choice can influence acceleration, handling and overall ride feel, especially when a route moves between smooth roads and rough gravel.
The Reserve wheels work alongside the carbon handlebar and carbon seatpost to create a balanced build. Riders can then fine-tune the setup with their preferred tires and accessories.
ASPERO APEX AXS 1 for Gravel Racing
The ASPERO APEX AXS 1 provides a practical platform for gravel racing and fast training. SRAM Apex AXS electronic shifting gives riders quick gear changes, while the 10–52T drivetrain provides a wide range for changing gradients.
The bike is also suitable for endurance riding and mixed-surface adventures. Its gravel-specific geometry gives riders a stable platform while retaining the responsiveness needed for faster sections.
This combination makes the bike useful beyond race day. Riders can use it for structured training, long-distance gravel routes and everyday exploration.
Gravel Bike for Long-Distance Riding
Comfort becomes increasingly important as gravel rides become longer. Cervélo’s updated ASPERO platform uses dropped seat stays and revised frame stiffness to provide more compliance. The additional mud clearance also improves practicality when conditions become difficult.
The bike’s wide gearing further supports long-distance riding. Riders can select easier gears for extended climbs and maintain a comfortable cadence over changing terrain.
For riders who regularly combine paved roads and gravel, the ASPERO offers a versatile platform without sacrificing its performance-focused design.
